Analyzing Funnel Performance

Surface's funnel analytics show exactly where visitors drop off in your forms and conversion paths. Use these insights to identify friction points and optimize for higher completion rates.

Access funnel analytics

  1. Navigate to Analytics > Funnels

  2. Select the form or conversion path you want to analyze

  3. Choose your date range

  4. View the step-by-step funnel visualization

Each step shows visits, completions, and drop-off rate.

Key metrics to track

Form start rate. Percentage of page visitors who begin your form. Low start rates indicate the form placement or CTA needs improvement.

Step completion rate. How many people who start a step actually complete it. High drop-off at a specific step signals a problem question.

Overall conversion rate. Visitors who complete the entire form divided by total visitors. This is your primary optimization target.

Partial submission rate. Percentage of starts that don't complete. Higher partials mean you're recovering some value from abandonment.

Time per step. How long visitors spend on each question. Unusually long times indicate confusion or hesitation.

Identify drop-off points

Look for steps with completion rates below 70%:

If Step 3 (email field) drops from 85% to 55%, that's a red flag. Visitors may be hesitant to share emails that early. Consider moving email later or adding trust signals like "We'll never spam you."

Common drop-off causes:

  • Too personal too soon β€” Asking for email or phone before building trust

  • Unclear questions β€” Confusing wording or too many options

  • Too many fields β€” Long forms overwhelm visitors

  • Required fields β€” Making optional questions required increases abandonment

Test removing or reordering the step with the highest drop-off. Even small changes can improve completion by 10-20%.

Segment funnel data

Break down funnels by traffic source or audience:

  • By source: Compare conversion rates from paid ads vs. organic vs. email

  • By device: Mobile vs. desktop performance (mobile often has lower completion)

  • By geography: Different regions may have different drop-off patterns

  • By returning visitor: First-time visitors vs. returning (returning usually convert better)

Use segments to find which audiences need funnel optimizations most.

Run A/B tests

Test variations to improve performance:

  1. Navigate to Forms > [Your Form] > A/B Tests

  2. Click Create Test

  3. Choose what to test: question order, field labels, number of steps, or CTA copy

  4. Set traffic split (typically 50/50)

  5. Launch the test and let it run for at least 100-200 submissions per variation

Surface automatically calculates statistical significance and declares a winner when confidence reaches 95%.

Don't stop tests early. Wait for statistical significance or you might implement a change that isn't actually better.

Track how your funnel improves over time:

  • Set a baseline conversion rate (your starting point)

  • Make one change at a time (test or optimization)

  • Measure impact for 1-2 weeks

  • Keep changes that improve conversion, revert those that don't

  • Repeat with the next highest-impact change

Check the Conversion Trends chart to see your progress week-over-week.

Funnel leak alerts

Set up notifications for sudden performance drops:

  1. Go to Settings > Alerts

  2. Enable Funnel Performance Alerts

  3. Set thresholds (e.g., "Alert if conversion rate drops below 20%" or "Alert if form starts drop by 30%")

  4. Choose notification channel (email, Slack)

This helps you catch issues like broken forms, technical errors, or sudden traffic quality drops.

Benchmark performance

Surface provides industry benchmarks:

  • B2B multi-step forms: 25-40% average completion rate

  • Single-step contact forms: 10-20% average completion rate

  • Demo request forms: 30-50% for qualified traffic

If you're significantly below benchmarks, focus on reducing form length and improving question clarity.

Teams that actively monitor and optimize funnels see 30-50% conversion improvements within 60 days through iterative testing and drop-off fixes.

Export funnel data

Download funnel reports for deeper analysis:

  1. View any funnel in the Analytics dashboard

  2. Click Export

  3. Choose CSV or connect to your BI tool via API

Use exports to build custom dashboards in Tableau, Looker, or your analytics platform of choice.
